Aunt Charlotte Polhemus - TP#102

My father's father's spinster sister Charlotte 'Lottie' Polhemus - unusually given her family background, Charlotte was a fashion buyer for Steinbeck's Dept Store in Asbury Park, New Jersey. When I knew her she had retired and lived with her brother, my grandfather on 9th Ave, Neptune City, New Jersey, US. Once or twice a year she would take me, on my own, to The Atlantic resturant in Ocean Grove. One of the last times, driving us past The Green Parrott Bar on Highway 33 she told me a secret (for the rest of the family were absolutely tee-total): they made good cocktails at the Green Parot and when I was old enough she would take me there for a drink. Unfortunately she didn't live that long. I was given her bed (which she had in fact died in) and this was a cause of nightmares. Once, many years later I did have a drink at The Green Parrott. On leaving a rather sexy young woman approached me in the car park: Had I, she asked, found Jesus? I dedicated my first book - Fashion & Anti-fashion - to Aunt Charlotte and a girlfriend who had recently and unexpectedly died.
