Poster with graffiti in Punk / Alternative / New Wave clothing shop (Trash & Vaudeville?), St Mark's Place, New York City, USA, 1981 [photo © Ted Polhemus]

Despite or arguably because of NYC being on its knees financially, the mid 70s gave rise to 3 of the world's great music genres and subcultures: Punk, Disco and Hip Hop. For Punk and 'New Wave', NYC's equivalent of The King's Road and Kennsington Market was St Mark's Place where numerous alternative style (and retro / vintage) clothing shops sprang up - the most famous and influential of which was Trash & Vaudeville.
